Lighting Basics: Warm vs Cool

Light transforms a room more than any single piece of furniture. Understanding the difference between warm (2700K) and cool (4000K+) light is the first step to creating the right atmosphere.

Living rooms and bedrooms thrive with warm light—it creates a sense of calm and intimacy. Look for bulbs in the 2700-3000K range, and pair them with fixtures that diffuse light softly, like linen-shaded table lamps or frosted glass pendants.

The most powerful design move in a neutral room is what you leave out.

Kitchens and workspaces benefit from slightly cooler light (3500-4000K) for clarity and focus. The key is mixing layers: ambient overhead light, task lighting where you work, and accent lighting to highlight architecture or objects.

The best spaces combine multiple light sources at different heights. A pendant at eye level, a table lamp creating a warm pool, and perhaps a candle for its irreplaceable flicker.
